Water Ceremony Community Mural
Pathway: Tierra, Agua, Energía y Tradición
A 22-by-100-foot community mural under the Colfax Viaduct honoring our connection to water, nature and land, led by David Ocelotl Garcia with the River Sisters Circle.
A ceremony honoring water
LCAC and the River Sisters Circle invited the community to help create a mural, led by David Ocelotl Garcia, in honor of our connection to water, nature and land.
Inspired by Chalchiuhtlicue, the Aztec goddess of terrestrial waters, “Water Ceremony” recognizes that environmental stewardship has been practiced by Indigenous communities for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. It is in our native heritage to care for the environment and Mother Earth.
In April 2023, community members designed portions of the river in workshops at Sun Valley Kitchen. In May, painting moved to the 22 ft × 100 ft east wall of LCAC's West Colfax building, under the Colfax Viaduct next to Empower Field. The mural was scheduled to be unveiled on May 20, 2023, at Sun Valley Rising's Viaduct Night Market.
Thank you to our partners and sponsors: River Sisters Circle, DEDO, West Colfax BID and Sun Valley Kitchen.
